Year End Review

Well here we are at the end of 2012, we survived the end of the world (again!) and have had an epic year in the UK with the Queens Diamond Jubilee and hosting the Olympics.
It has also been an epic year for nail polish! Who can believe that this time last year I didn't even know about Etsy? My collection only numbered 200 polishes? I had no blog? My photography skills were less than desirable?
Ive seen lots of blogs doing top ten lists but I just couldn't work out an order so I've decided to give you a run down of all the things that have been important to me this year and not rank anyone. Everyone and everything listed here is as important as the next :-)
Here I will sum up my year of polish epicness, they are in no particular order but these are the highs of my polish year...

Ahhhhhh Etsy how did I ever live without you? My first purchase was from the lovely Dolly at Dollish Polish on 13th January 2012 and consisted of the infamous Toxic Avenger and Whoever Heard Of A Snozzberry.
So began my love affair with indie polishes and I've never looked back! Countless hours have been spent trawling Etsy like a mad woman trying to quench my polish thirst...

Dollish Polish

So Dollish were my first indie purchases. What can you say about Dolly? She has gone above and beyond with her polishes this year, during the first half of the year everyone was Dollish crazy. I remember sitting at my computer refreshing over and over again to get my hands on the latest Dollish Polish and having to pounce on them and checkout straight away just to get the one you wanted. Since then luckily for all of us Dolly has spread her wings and gotten her own shop and has branched out to distributors such as Llarowe and Overall Beauty
Dollish Polish easily produced my favourite Halloween polishes ever, Vampire Coven and Spectral Pup were sooooo awesome!

During early April the polish world was gripped by Nail-Venturous fever! People were literally scrambling to get these polishes and it wasn't hard to see why, Amy was producing some of the most coveted and innovative polishes at that time. It all started with the madness that is Floam, a polish replicated by many in all sorts of combinations, but Floam was the embryo from which they all sprang. Never before had someone put together tiny matte glitters that morph to make one colour, it was magical!
From that moment on Nail-Venturous became THE indie brand to own. The shop openings were legendary, polishes sold out in seconds they were almost impossible to get your hands on. Never before have I seen frenzy like that and I think it'll be a while until we see it again....
Sadly the genius behind Nail-Venturous Lacquers decided to hang up her mixing gloves, but luckily for us Ninja Polish took on Floam, Pinkerbell and a couple of others and have made them their own.

Girly Bits

Girly Bits (or Pam's Girly Bits as it was known originally) were also playing with the big boys. It all started for me when I saw a sneak preview of the colour shifting polish Shift Happens, that was when I knew I had to have that polish so I put my whiny head on and went begging Pam for a bottle before it was released! My begging paid off because along with the other polishes I brought from her came a mini bottle of Shift Happens :-)
Girly Bits has gone from strength to strength this year with gems such as Smurf Dance and Cu Blue. Pam can do it all shimmers, glitters, colour shifting and holo there is no end to this woman's talent!

Holographic Hussy

May 2012 the Holographic Hussy blog was born. Never in a million years did I think that my blog would become as successful as it it is in just seven short months! I'm so thrilled to have so many loyal followers both here and on Facebook and so much support from the indie community. Its always an honour and a shock (a pleasant shock) to be approached by indie makers to swatch their polishes for them. I even have my own Nail-Venturous polish!
Thank you all so so much :-)

Enchanted Polish

While browsing Etsy back in April I stumbled upon Enchanted Polish and was utterly blown away by the amazing array of holographic polish that they made. This wasn't just your basic holo polish in pastels like we were used to this was in your face, bright coloured holos the like I'd never seen before!
My Enchanted collection started with Awesomeness, Ocean Potion and Unicorn Tears and it has grow and grown. This relationship isn't just a fling this is a life long love affair, as long as Chelsea makes polish I want them in my collection. Enchanted Polish has also grown a lot this year not only does Chelsea now have her own online shop but she also supplies Llarowe and Harlow & Co. She also has branched out from just holo polish and makes awesome duo/multi-chromes and glitters.

Darling Diva Polish

Yet another indie polish gem I discovered whilst Etsy browsing is Darling Diva Polish, I was grabbed by Space Beetle and how it bore a striking resemblance to Dollish Polish Toxic Avenger (which is now discontinued). Into my cart it went and yes it was as good as I wanted it to be, it not an exact dupe of Toxic Avenger but in a world where TA is no longer available its a bloody good replacement.
Ringer was my second polish, I wanted Clarins 230 so badly but could never find it and Ringer is a pretty good alternative. I now have Clarins 230 (thanks to my lovely friend Donna, love you!) and I keep meaning to do a comparison shot.
DDP continue to bring out a wide variety of polishes and my favourite red, white and blue polish this year was Anita. It was just perfect for all of my patriotic occasions in 2012 :-)

It appeared that I had been hiding under a rock when Crowstoes appeared on the Llarowe site, I'd never heard of this mysterious indie brand. I'm so glad that I did though because I've fallen in love with their gothic, funky vibe.
Bunny Slope is my all time favourite white glitter, its simply divine!

Estee Lauder Smashed

Its not very often that a mainstream brand catches my eye but oh Smashed is gorgeous! This is one polish that I have a back up bottle of because I just know I'm going to use all of it. I hardly ever wear a polish more than once but Smashed has been out of her box several times since its release. This polish wears like iron, it is a girls best friend :-)

Hare Polish

Hare Polish was also new to me this year. These once again came to my attention when Llarowe started stocking them and at first I have to say I wasn't too sure about them. They tend to be a little more "grown up" in style compared to many of the other polish brands that I like. All that changed though when they released the Illuminated Life Collection, polishes so beautiful they actually glowed!

Max Factor Fantasy Fire

Who can think of polish in 2012 and not bring up the epic Fantasy Fire!? It was an instant success! I was going into Boots (a large chemist/beauty store we have in the UK) nearly every day to pick up as much of this polish as possible when it first came out to make sure that my friends overseas could get it.
Possibly the most coveted mainstream polishes of the year...
Time for some slightly dodgy pre-blog photographs, i apologise in advance lol!

Blue Polish

2012 saw the arrival of some beautiful blue polishes. There was Baker Street by Nails Inc, Eliot by Pretty Serious Cosmetics, IKB:2012 by Rescue Beauty Lounge and Cobalt Blue by Barry M. All stunning blues...

 Picture Polish

2012 was a fantastic year for Picture Polish, they released some cracking polish and had a wonderful Blog Fest 2012 which I was honoured to be a part of. Their collaboration shades were spectacular with amazing holographics and the release of a new multicoloured sparkle pigment. I am sooooo excited to see what next year brings.

The Ones To Watch In 2013

Jindie Nails

Jindie Nails are relatively new to the indie making scene but in a few short months they have packed one hell of a punch! Jen has created so many beautiful polishes that I've just had to have them all. I'm a total sucker for white crelly polishes with glitter and this is something that Jen does better than anyone I know.
Jindie Nails have produced some of my most favourite polishes this year (and that's saying a lot for a woman that owns over 2000 polishes lol!)
Jindie Nails recent opening of her Etsy store had women once again glued to their refresh buttons in the hope of getting the latest creations, i even sat up until 4am (GMT) to get my hands on the new stuff. Jens customer service is excellent and her attention to detail is second to none. I cant wait to see what she has planned for the future!

Nail Nation 3000

The emergence of Maria onto the indie scene has seen some new amazing holographic polishes. I'm not talking just holographic, I'm talking super, triple holographics with bells on!
Nail Nation will go faaaaaar in 2013 and I see these new holographics being in high demand, keep your eyes peeled for new releases early 2013 and I've got lots of swatches to show you too :-)

Daily Lacquer

Daily Lacquer is another recently formed indie polish company spearheaded by the lovely Maggy. Her first collection was a complete hit with some beautiful and unique polishes. You can tell that these polishes are her babies and a lot of love and thought goes into each bottle.
Her second collection - The Holo-day Lovelies featured one of my favourite holographic glitter polishes of the year, Holo 101 is an absolute treat!
I cant wait to see what the future brings for this lovely little company :-)

So there you have it that pretty much sums up my polish year, sorry for such a mammoth post lol! Tomorrow I'll have my top 10 polishes of 2012 so keep your eyes peeled for that. Have a great New Years Eve, stay safe and I'll see you all next year!!

Daily Lacquer Holo 101

For my Christmas Eve Eve manicure I have chosen Holo 101 by Daily lacquer over a white base.

Holo 101 is a cute mix of pastel holographic glitters suspended in a clear base. I've not seen pastel holographic glitter before so this polish really stands out for me. Trust me the glitter really sparkles, even in low light.

As with all Daily Lacquer polishes it is packed to the seams with glitter and for this mani I only used one coat, however it can be built to full opacity in three coats. The formula was easy to work with and the glitter distributed easily across the nail. For a glitter polish it dries fairly flat and didn't need tonnes of top coat to get it smooth :-)

The swatches here show one coat of Holo 101 over a white base followed by one coat of Seche Vite.

Daily Lacquer polishes are available at Maggy's Etsy store. There is also a Daily Lacquer Facebook page where you can keep up to date with new releases and restock information.

Enchanted Polish December 2012

Last month I was lucky enough to score one of the Enchanted Polish super limited edition polishes called December 2012, it arrived on Friday and I immediately took off what I was wearing an slapped this baby on!

December 2012 is a highly pigmented rosey/purplely/mauvey/pink polish with a delicate scattered holographic effect. Sorry to be so vague on the colour but I don't really know how to describe it, ill let you make up your minds from the photos :-)

As with all Enchanted polishes the formula was exceptional and almost a one coater, I've used two coats here just for added depth but if you apply quite thickly (like i do) you can get away with one coat. I did not add a top coat because Entchanted's don't really need one and I didn't want to ruin the holo effect.

Unfortunately December 2012 has now sold out but you can get your hands on other Enchanted Polishes at Harlow & Co and Llarowe. Enchanted also have their own Facebook page where you can keep up to date with new releases and restocks.

Urban Outfitters Holographic Porn!

Sooooo I had some awesome nail mail arrive the other day from my lovely friend Hazel. She managed to grab me the newly released holographic polishes by Urban Outfitters. Unfortunately they haven't arrived in the stores or online here in the UK so I have various "drug polish mules" that ship polishes from the States and other countries :-)

On to the polish...

This is a set of three polishes Green, Pink and Silver. No the names are not at all imaginative but hey why bother with names when the holo is this good? And it is SERIOUSLY good! The formula on each one is easy to work with compared to some other highly holographic polishes on the market. Three coats is needed to achieve full coverage and as as usual I didn't wear a top coat for any of these polishes as top coat tends to dull the holo effect. I cant comment on the wear time as I simply swatched these on one hand for the photos and then removed them.

Now for the photos. Unfortunately the UK winter is not kind to holographic polish, but the flash on my camera worked wonders...
